The Redbreast Moscatel Wine Cask Edition is a limited-release, single pot still Irish whiskey and the fifth installment in the brand's Iberian Series. This expression is crafted by finishing a blend of 9- to 11-year-old whiskeys in rare Moscatel wine casks for 16 months, resulting in a profile that balances traditional pot still spices with sun-drenched floral and citrus notes.
Redbreast’s Iberian Series celebrates Gilbey’s sherry history of importing fortified wines and sherry since the late 1800s – with a series of releases from across the Iberian peninsula. Master Blender David McCabe has travelled to source casks from the sun-kissed bodegas of Spain to the sun-drenched quintas of Portugal, to explore and expand the sherried flavours of Redbreast.
Key Characteristics
- Production Process: Initially matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks, the whiskey undergoes a secondary 16-month maturation in European oak hogsheads seasoned with Moscatel wine from Bodegas Quitapenas in Málaga, Spain.
- Signature Style: It maintains the classic Redbreast "oily" and creamy mouthfeel but introduces a "brighter" and more "floral-sweet" lift compared to the heavier dark fruit notes found in the Pedro Ximénez or Port editions.
- Technical Specs: Bottled at 46% ABV (92 proof) and is non-chill filtered
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Fresh and floral with zesty citrus (orange peel and tangerine), honeyed apricot, and ripe peach, underscored by vanilla oak and a dusting of nutmeg.
- Palate: A rich, velvety texture featuring layers of toffee, honeycomb, and vanilla cream. These sweet notes are balanced by orchard fruits like pear and green apple, along with subtle herbal undertones like chamomile tea.
- Finish: Long and persistent, dominated by lingering pot still spices (black peppercorn and clove) and wine-seasoned oak
