How Does Champagne Differ from Sparkling Wine?

How Does Champagne Differ from Sparkling Wine?

The Difference

Champagne differs from sparkling wine primarily in its origin, production method, and grape varieties. It is a distinct type of sparkling wine that must be produced in the Champagne region of France and crafted using the traditional method, wherein a second fermentation occurs in the bottle, resulting in its characteristic fine bubbles and complex flavor profile. Champagne is typically made from a combination of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier grapes. In contrast, sparkling wine is a broader category encompassing effervescent wines produced worldwide, such as Prosecco from Italy and Cava from Spain. These wines often utilize different grape varieties and may be produced using alternative techniques, such as the tank method, which is faster and tends to yield larger, less refined bubbles. While all Champagne is sparkling wine, not all sparkling wine qualifies as Champagne.

Here are a few curated Champagne and sparkling wine recommendations to help you experience and appreciate the distinct character of each style.
