What's the Difference Between Whiskey and Bourbon?

Whisky is a broad category of distilled spirits made from fermented grain mash, and it can include various grains such as barley, corn, rye, and wheat. Bourbon is a specific type of American whisky with strict legal requirements. It must be made in the United States with at least 51% corn in its grain mash, giving it a sweeter flavor. Bourbon is aged in new charred oak barrels, which add caramel, vanilla, and oak notes. It must also be distilled to no more than 160 proof and entered into the barrel at no more than 125 proof. Additionally, bourbon cannot contain additives or artificial flavorings. These regulations give bourbon a unique character, setting it apart from other whiskeys. While all bourbon is whiskey, not all whiskey qualifies as bourbon due to these specific rules.
